Saturday 21st February

Our western correspondent, Jes Mania reports....

Saturday 21st was a bright cold winters day, and 6 members were on the team sheet. So after the usual catch up over a brew, we split the gang in two. Pete, John and Keith walked to Alton, and Ian, Adrian, and Eddie to Alresford. Later in the morning Martin R joined us, and with the walks over, we continued as two groups into the afternoon. Pete left us for duties on the RAT in the evening, so one group of 4 walked down the hill to the end of the Shrave cutting to finish the final 6 lengths of flat bottom rail attention. Another 8 fastenings of the RNB 6 variety were changed, and then we returned on the long walk back up the hill, catching a few more fastenings we were not happy with on our way back to base.

Meanwhile Adrian and John worked on the other side of the hill attending to a piece of early preparation work, in oiling the RNB 6 fastenings ready for the last 9 lengths to have their pads changed. At the end of this job, which will be before the summer, the railway will have all of its 1.5 miles or so of flat bottomed rail attended to in Pad replacement and fastening maintenance work, a task that has been worked on over the last decade or so, with some gang members sadly no longer with us to see the rewards of everyone efforts. Great to see Bittern back on shed today.

Stop Press. The Chawton Heights Pway hut window is nearly complete, with gloss paint applied. Excellent work Neil!
