Today was one of those late summer days with glorious sunshine. With 10 people arriving at base first thing (including 5 before 6.50am), we were all keen to get on with matters.
Iain and Ian J departed on the line inspection to Alresford, and Corina and Keith B headed for Alton.
Adrian C and Neil meanwhile took the Company transport to Ampfield to collect a pack of bricks for use in the plinth to be constructed for the former Great Missenden Signal Box, up on the picnic site at Ropley. This left John, Pete, Martin W and Keith H to go straight to Ropley to finish off the remaining fishplate oiling in the two platform roads, a task they completed by lunchtime. In the afternoon they also worked through the locomotive yard, oiling the fishplates there.
It has taken 6 months to complete the fishplate oiling along the whole length of the line. Very well done to all of the guys who have contributed.
In afternoon the gang re-positioned, with Keith B and Iain going to Ropley to clear the centre track drain, an ongoing and thankless task. Ian, Corina, Adrian C, and Neil went to the Grosvenor Hut, where further brick laying took place on the chimney (3 corbel courses were completed). Not all were needed on that task, so Ian continued clearing the vegetation from the tops of the banks, until the strimmer came into contact with a piece of old buried wire in the ground. Very unfortunate, as good progress was being made.
All returned to base at around 4pm, but sadly no cake on offer today.
