Saturday 13th August
Excellent warm and sunny weather conditions greeted a gang of 9 as they assembled at M&FM for the day's activities. Brian Hi and Keith H headed off on the line inspection to Alton leaving the others to take a trip down to Ropley to take a look at no.15A yard points, the switch rails in which had been reported to have moved, with the stretcher bar fouling the point lock housing. Adequate clearance was however found to be present, so they returned to base to collect tools for the programmed activities.
Eddie, Martin W, Matt, and John set off with the Pway skate/tool carrier down to Grosvenor bank where they carried on with the lubrication and running off of chair nuts, with some stubborn seized ones having to be cut off. Neil and Adrian C meanwhile went to The Grosvenor hut where Neil glazed the window, Adrian completed the fitting of the door lock, and then both fitted the window shield.
Corina and the returning line walkers travelled down to the Butts on the Alton section and made a start on the removal of the remaining brickwork to the former Butts Junction Signal Box (which was latterly used as a Pway hut), joined a bit later by Adrian. The bricks are to be recovered prior to the area being cleared for the replacement of the Maiden Lane (Whitedown Lane) bridge.
