Saturday 26th November

With your Editor on an away day to the Warley Model Railway Exhibition, our Western correspondent Jes Mania reports, with thanks to our Southern correspondent, the Hon. J.Y. Doom for the photographs.......

Today was a classic damp/overcast November Saturday as ten turned in for duty today on the last of the occupation Saturdays before the Santa Specials.

We had a priority job requiring our immediate attention at Ropley,  so at 08.00am  we fired up the Wickham, loaded up the tools and sailed forth.

Eddie, Martin W, Brian Hi, Graham and guest Jonny from the loco group were put down with tools on Grosevnor Bank to continue with the chair bolt changing exercise. This left John, Ian's R & J, Keith H and Adrian N to go to Ropley where they attended to shovel packing the two panels of mainline track that the mid week boys had changed sleepers on during the previous week.

Later the two gangs joined up on Grosvenor Bank to continue working across this exposed location. Lunch was taken on the bank, but we did not stop for long as the damp weather went right through us and standing around did not help.

During the day John ran a Taxi service to Alton to pick up Neil & Paul who continued their efforts in re-pointing the chimney on Chawton Heights hut.

A good days work by all.

  1. It certainly was a day to keep on the move. Flipping sleepers to tap out worn bolts and filling beds is warm work. At the risk of being buried in a bed, may I suggest that after we’ve completed to re-padding we have a day on the section tidying up the shoulders. They’ve become ragged and could do with being ship shape and Bynam fashion.
