Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th November

The tranquil location of M&FM was disturbed on Monday by the sound of stone against steel, as the gang filled bags of new ballast from the heap in the yard. The bags were then transported to Alton, where old and contaminated ballast was replaced with new, in the beds between timber sleepers re-newed a few months before.

For those weary from the ballast shovelling the day before, Tuesday unfortunately brought more of the same, with bags filled for the timber and point crossing nose replacement works at Alresford, to be undertaken during the course of the next few weeks. To break the monotony, the timber tool shed was also tidied up, and modifications were made to six un-keying hammers, to transform them into the lighter keying up variety (of which there had been a shortage- some had mysteriously disappeared!). To complete the day's work, sections of drainage pipe were transported out to Boyneswood Bridge in readiness for laying in a fortnight's time, to deal with the issue of run off from the road above.
