The day of the Railway's annual Sponsored Walk saw six brave (or simply mad!-Ed) souls battle against heavy rainfall in the morning, to complete the fishplate oiling in the last stretch of Sun Lane cutting, and through Alresford Station to the head shunt. The gang were very grateful to be working close by to the West Country Buffet with a plentiful supply of hot tea on tap, and the customary breakfast baguettes to replace dwindling energy reserves. The completion of the job just outside the Watercress Belle coach set was heralded by the appearance of the sun, and the offer of yet more tea by a sympathetic member of the Belle staff, served up with shortbread biscuits (silver service of course!).
Following lunch and the departure of two cold and wet members, and the arrival of one other, the afternoon was spent drying out and digging out ballast beds between Sun Lane bridge and the Station, in support of the timber replacement work to be started by the mid-week gang the following Monday/Tuesday. Thirteen beds were excavated before failing light and exhaustion brought the activity to a close. Quite an achievement for 5 people!
