Ian J, Graham, Pete, John, Keith H, and Adrian assembled at M&FM for the days activities, relishing the prospect of fine, sunny conditions following several weeks of wet and miserable weather. It was another non-operational day, but a photographic charter was booked, meaning that the gang were unable to use their Wickham Trolley for transport.
Work was focussed at the new Pway hut site at Yew Tree Curve (the long walk out to the site is a nuisance, but the location is stunning-Ed). The first couple of hours were spent excavating the foundation trench for the chimney, and sorting through and cutting to length timbers for the next hut. There followed a trip to Alresford for breakfast, where Ian, John, and Adrian also received their Long Service Awards from the Society Chairman. 85 years of service between the three of them. It's the pay that keeps us in the job!
Returning to the hut site, John and Adrian took the company van to the local Builders Merchants to buy supplies of sand, cement, and concrete blocks for the chimney construction work, while the others carried on with the tasks started earlier. Later on, with the gang back to its full complement, the foundation trench was completed and concreted in readiness for the commencement of block laying the following Saturday. The 9F also appeared at one point as a bonus on a demonstration freight photographic charter, making several passes before heading back down the line.
