Whilst on a visit to the west country I was lucky enough to visit Wells, and decided to walk out to the nearest point on the old Somerset and Dorset line. Climbing to some 220 metres above sea level, I planned to head for the area around Winsor Hill Tunnel. In the picture below is the more westerly tunnel, the north bound route. This the shorter of the two tunnels, and is open to walk through. The other bore is closed up, and I wondered if this tunnel was the one that had the Olympus Engine for Concorde blown up in it as part of an experiment?
The next picture below shows the Ham Wood Viaduct at some 85 metres in length, just north of the tunnel site. A good visit to this very rural, high location.
