Today was a day of perfect weather conditions. Warm and sunny at times, no rain, and when you stopped working, a feeling of heat on your back, glorious.
With 7 people arriving on site today, Ian J and Keith H walked to Alton, and Eddie, Martin W, Adrian N, John and Pete set off for an early start on the fishplate oiling at Alresford.
The walking crew were joined in Alton by Neil, after having inspected the mid week gang's efforts changing 49 sleepers over Butts bridge, no small task with very little room, good efforts chaps. Lunchtime found us meeting up in Alresford, which was particularly busy. Lunch was taken and enjoyed on Platform 2, Neil being kept under control every time the Class 37 arrived. The weekend features a 3 train service with the Watercress festival in full swing on Sunday.
The afternoon was a landmark moment, I never thought I would report that we set out fishplate oiling on the (original) Alresford- Itchen Abbas section trackwork, but that is what we did, until we broke one of the machines. Eddie will be burning the midnight oil this week again, undertaking repairs. In all, over 50 joints done, and we now move onto the Medstead to Alton section next week, with a promised cast of thousands.
