Saturday 13th June

A gang of 7 arrived at M&FM in mist and drizzle, but that didn't dampen their spirits with the prospect of finer conditions later on.

Following the usual refreshments and the early morning catch up, Eddie, Martin W, Ian R, Pete, and John departed up the Alton section to continue fishplate oiling from the point they had reached two weeks before at Hampshire Hunt bridge. This left Adrian C and Adrian N to carry out the line inspection to Alton, where on arrival they were joined by Neil and Paul C.

The second contingent had intended to carry on with the cutting up of timbers at The Grosvenor hut site for the rest of the day following the line walk, however a telephone call from the Bernie the gang Manager taken on the train ride back up the hill to M&FM, resulted in a quick change of plan. Joined by Martin R, they travelled to Alresford to cut up and make safe a fallen tree in Sun Lane cutting, before taking lunch on the Station picnic site. Another call from Bernie resulted in a trip to Alton to replace a broken Panloc fastening and keys in the track at the London end of the Station, which put pay to any ideas of getting to the hut site.

The oiling gang meanwhile managed to tackle over 60 pairs of fishplates over the course of the day before retiring.

Unfortunately there are no photographs included in this instalment, as your Editor and others were so engrossed in the activities that they forgot to take any!
