A report from our Southern correspondent, the OS Mapman........
What better way to avoid the bank holiday crowds than hide away on the Mid Hants. Seven of us thought so. Brian Hi, Pete and Adrian headed Alton way track inspecting, leaving Eddie, Martins B and W and me to carry on fishplate oiling from Northside Crossing. First off we had to find a Cembre. Those teasers in the mid-week gang do like to make life difficult for us. We found them at Alresford. Very impressive the amount of digging out and sleeper changing they're doing.
Parking up at Bighton Lane bridge we met the Martins, who'd gone ahead to retrieve the trolley and other gear. So, it was back up to the crossing and start work. Progress was so good we treated ourselves to breakfast at the WCB. Suckers for punishment. Well, we were oily on the outside, might as well get oily on the inside. Back to work, down the long straight (noting 3 sleepers needing packing), under Bighton Lane bridge, past the damaged 58 MP sign. The track inspection team caught us up, their ranks swelled by Neil. By now the sun was breaking through, warming things up nicely. Reaching the distant signal we decided on an early finish. We took the Cembre back to Medstead and into the machine store - where it belongs after use!
